ACTION

Glycerin primarily acts osmotically, binding water in the large intestine which increases the water content in the stools and facilitates bowel movements. It also has a mild peristaltic effect.

CHARACTERISTICS/USP

Fast-acting: bowel movement usually occurs within 5 minutes (though it may take up to 30 minutes)
No drug interactions: does not interact with other medications
Complementary use: can be used alongside treatments for chronic constipation
Plant-based glycerin: made from vegetable glycerin

DOSAGE & USAGE

1 adult enema. Allow at least 3 minutes without bowel movement for full effect. If bowel movement does not occur within 30 minutes, a second enema may be administered within the next hour.

Using a larger dose may cause irritation of the intestines, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
